Straw Bale Wall Systems

There are three main types of bale wall systems; load-bearing (Nebraska style), post and beam infill and hybrids that combine the two. As implied by the term "load-bearing" this building style uses the bales as a structural component. The roof structures weight is directly applied to the top of the bale wall, which then transfers the load to the foundation. Supporting frameworks are therefore unnecessary, just the bales and plaster are used. This is the appeal of the Nebraska style construction as expense, complexity and lumber consumption are reduced. The minimum use of building materials results in less cost and a less dramatic environmental impact.
Usually in timber frame wall construction studs are spaced at equal intervals and insulation is placed in the cavity. However, as you can see above the bale wall has framing around the window and at the top and bottom plates. *Click Image to Enlarge.

Similar to a timber framed house, a post and beam framework provides the structural support of the building using straw as infill. Assemblage consists of using wood or metal posts, beams and rails, and the fitted roof. The bales are infilled between the spaces of the posts, windows and door frames are fitted and the form of the wall begins to take shape. Thorough rendering is in order as moisture and rodents can be a problem if everything is not sealed well.
